Fourteen personnel from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have successfully completed a six-week Aviation Security (AVSEC) training programme in Mogadishu, designed to enhance airport safety, security awareness, and operational preparedness among deployed forces.
The course was conducted under the framework of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia and focused on equipping the soldiers with modern aviation security skills, including threat detection, airport safety procedures, and risk mitigation.
During the pass-out ceremony, the AUSSOM Sector One Contingent Administrative Officer, Hamza Kasaija, congratulated the trainees for their commitment and discipline throughout the programme. He encouraged them to put the knowledge and skills they had acquired into practice while executing their duties at the airport.
Col Kasaija emphasised the importance of vigilance and professionalism in aviation security operations, reminding the graduates that their actions directly contribute to the protection of lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
“Remain alert, prioritise safety and apply the procedures you have learned in order to minimise risks that could endanger people or airport operations,” he advised.
The lead facilitator, David Romoleroux, who serves as Prime Manager at Hart/Longport, explained that the course was designed to strengthen the trainees’ technical capacity and professionalism in managing aviation security responsibilities within a complex operational environment.
He noted that well-trained personnel are vital in safeguarding aviation facilities, particularly in mission areas where security threats remain a concern.
The Battle Group Air Component Commander, Thamson Musoke, also applauded the participants for their dedication, discipline, and teamwork during the training. He further extended appreciation to AUSSOM leadership, UPDF commanders, and the facilitators for their continuous support in building the capacity of deployed personnel.
Senior and junior officers from both AUSSOM and the UPDF attended the ceremony to witness the successful completion of the course.
