KAMPALA — Two children have died and three others are nursing injuries following an alleged stabbing incident at a family home in Kalungu Zone, Ggaba, Makindye Division, Kampala, in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident, which occurred at about 4am on August 20, 2026, has left police investigating suspected cases of murder, attempted murder and arson.
According to police, the tragedy came to light after a housemaid was alerted by a car alarm and cries for help coming from the home. Upon checking, she reportedly found several children inside the house with severe stab wounds.
One of the victims, 14-year-old Khadija Daizy, was found dead in her bedroom. Another child, seven-year-old Hawa Dalena, was rushed to Nsambya Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Three other children, aged 13, eight and five, survived the attack and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have identified Namayo Dorothy, 43, a Kenyan national and mother of the children, as a suspect in the incident. She was also found injured and is currently receiving treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital under police guard.
The circumstances leading to the attack remain unclear, although residents have alleged that the incident may have followed a domestic disagreement between the woman and her husband. Police have, however, not yet established the motive and investigations are continuing.
The incident also involved a vehicle at the family home. According to police, a Toyota Hiace was set on fire and completely burnt during the incident. Investigators reportedly recovered a jerrycan suspected to have contained petrol from the scene.
The bodies of the two deceased children were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations as detectives continued gathering evidence.
Kabalagala Police Division has opened investigations into the alleged murder, attempted murder and arson. Homicide detectives, Scene of Crime Officers and Fire and Rescue personnel examined the scene and collected exhibits to assist with the investigation.
The surviving children remain under medical care, while police are expected to question relevant witnesses and the suspect once her medical condition allows.
Police have also been working to establish the exact sequence of events inside the home, including what happened before the housemaid responded to the alarm and children’s cries.
The incident has shocked residents of Ggaba and renewed concern over domestic disputes and their potential impact on children and other family members.
Authorities have urged members of the public with information that could assist investigators to come forward as inquiries continue.
No charges have been confirmed against the suspect at this stage, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.
