KAMPALA — Campaigns for the 2026–2031 National Women Council elections are gaining momentum, with Kengaju Jennifer emerging as a strong contender for the position of National Vice Chairperson.

Kengaju, who is contesting on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket with support from the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), is campaigning under the theme “Unity and Empowerment for the Structure and Grassroots Women,” with her leadership approach anchored on servant leadership.

She has positioned her campaign around the need to strengthen unity among women leaders while ensuring that grassroots women are empowered to participate meaningfully in social, economic and political development.

Kengaju says her leadership philosophy is based on humility, accessibility and service, promising to remain a leader who listens to the concerns of women and advocates for their interests at different levels of the Women Council structure.

If elected National Vice Chairperson, Kengaju has pledged to prioritise four key areas:

Unity within the Women Council structure: She says she will promote teamwork and cooperation among women leaders from the village to the national level, while encouraging collaboration beyond political and personal differences.

Economic empowerment of grassroots women: Kengaju plans to advocate for greater access to government economic empowerment programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and the GROW Project, among other livelihood initiatives.

Servant leadership: She has pledged to maintain an accessible and responsive leadership style, saying she will listen to women’s concerns, remain engaged with communities and lobby for improved rights, opportunities and representation.

Strengthening the Women Council: As Vice Chairperson, Kengaju says she will work closely with the Chairperson to strengthen the Council’s role in policy formulation and ensure that women’s views are effectively represented in national decision-making processes.

Her campaign comes at a time when women’s leaders are seeking stronger representation and greater access to economic opportunities, particularly at the grassroots.

Kengaju has appealed to delegates to support what she describes as tested, accountable and servant-oriented leadership, with a focus on putting the interests of grassroots women at the centre of the Women Council’s agenda.

She is seeking the mandate to serve as National Vice Chairperson of the Women Council for the 2026–2031 term.
