Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), on Wednesday welcomed Charlene Ruto for a courtesy visit at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe.
The meeting, held at the elite military facility, reflected the continued interaction between prominent leaders and institutions from Uganda and Kenya. Gen. Kainerugaba received Ms. Ruto and her delegation in a gesture that observers say highlights the enduring friendship between the two neighboring states.
Ms. Ruto, daughter of William Ruto, was accompanied by a team that included Mr. George Nkya, Honorary Consul of Morocco; Mr. Festus Orina; Ms. Varsheeni Ragupathy; and Hon. Jane Frances Acilo. During the visit, she conveyed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to her and praised the spirit of cooperation that characterizes relations between Kampala and Nairobi.
The courtesy call followed Gen. Kainerugaba’s recent communication on X (formerly Twitter), where he indicated plans to travel to Kenya for a meeting with President Ruto. The announcement has been viewed by analysts as a sign of sustained diplomatic engagement and efforts to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Uganda and Kenya, both key members of the East African Community (EAC), share more than a border. Their relationship is anchored in shared history, cultural affinity, and strong people-to-people connections that continue to deepen through political, military, and economic collaboration.
Economically, Kenya remains one of Uganda’s most important trading partners, with bilateral trade surpassing USD 1.5 billion in 2025. As a landlocked country, Uganda also relies heavily on Kenya’s transport infrastructure, particularly the Port of Mombasa, as a crucial gateway for imports and exports.
Such engagements between senior officials and influential figures are widely regarded as vital in reinforcing regional stability, boosting economic integration, and promoting collective prosperity across East Africa.
