Mrs Karugire, daughter of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, revealed over the weekend that unknown individuals had created fake TikTok accounts bearing her name, images, and personal information. The accounts were allegedly being used to defraud members of the public.
She confirmed that the matter had been reported to police and other security organs, noting that preliminary inquiries had already led to the identification of some suspects.
According to Mrs Karugire, the impostors were exploiting her online presence to solicit money from unsuspecting users under false pretences.
“I have received reports that fake accounts using my name and pictures are asking people for money in exchange for assistance. I would like to make it clear that I would never do this under any circumstances,” she said in a statement, urging the public to stay alert.
She cautioned Ugandans against sending money to anyone claiming to represent her, describing the activity as a criminal scheme designed to exploit public trust.
Mrs Karugire joined TikTok in January 2025, where she has been using the platform to share content related to official engagements and activities involving the First Family. In January, she also hosted what was described as President Museveni’s first interactive live session on the platform.
However, as her following has grown, cases of impersonation have reportedly increased, with several fraudulent accounts emerging in recent weeks.
She emphasised that she operates only one verified TikTok account, @Natashakarugire83, and advised users to confirm account authenticity before engaging.
Mrs Karugire added that her team had gathered evidence, including screenshots and account information, which had been handed over to investigators. Authorities are expected to handle the case under existing cybercrime and fraud laws.
By press time, security agencies had not released an official statement, though investigations remain ongoing.
