A dramatic yet heartening wildlife rescue unfolded in Wakiso District when officers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) saved a stranded serval cat from a fish pond in Seeta Village, Busukuma Division. The unexpected incident began when Mr. Bazira Henry discovered the wild feline struggling in one of his ponds early in the morning. Realizing the animal was exhausted and unable to climb out on its own, he quickly alerted authorities for help.

Responding without delay, UWA’s Problem Animal Capture Unit, led by Sgt. Oswald Tumanya, arrived at the scene equipped with specialized rescue gear. Curious residents gathered at a safe distance as the trained officers assessed the situation. The serval, frightened and fatigued, attempted to stay afloat while clinging to the muddy edges of the pond. The rescue team carefully coordinated their approach, mindful not to cause further distress to the animal.

Using nets and protective equipment, the officers skillfully secured the serval and gently lifted it out of the water. Their swift yet calm intervention ensured the cat was rescued alive and without serious injury. Once safely contained, the animal was examined on-site to confirm it had not sustained visible wounds during its ordeal.

Following the rescue, the serval was transported to the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) for professional veterinary assessment and monitoring. Wildlife experts there conducted health checks to evaluate possible stress, dehydration, or minor injuries. After receiving proper care and observation, the serval was scheduled for release back into a suitable natural habitat away from human settlements.

Servals are medium-sized wild cats known for their striking appearance—long legs, lean bodies, golden coats marked with black spots, and notably large ears that enhance their sharp sense of hearing. Native to Africa, they thrive in savannahs, wetlands, and grasslands where they hunt rodents, birds, and small reptiles. Their remarkable jumping ability allows them to pounce accurately on prey hidden in tall grass. By controlling rodent populations, servals play a vital ecological role in maintaining balance within their ecosystems.

Although typically shy and elusive, servals may occasionally wander near human communities, especially in areas where wetlands border farmland or fish ponds. Expanding settlements and habitat changes can increase such encounters. Wildlife authorities emphasize that when this happens, residents should avoid attempting to capture or harm the animals and instead contact trained professionals.

The successful rescue in Seeta Village highlights the importance of prompt reporting and responsible wildlife management. Local residents expressed gratitude for UWA’s rapid response, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding both community members and wildlife. Many praised the officers for demonstrating that coexistence between humans and wild animals is possible when handled with care and expertise.

This incident stands as a testament to UWA’s ongoing dedication to conservation, public safety, and environmental stewardship. By protecting species like the serval and responding effectively to human-wildlife conflicts, the authority continues to uphold Uganda’s rich natural heritage for present and future generations.
