MOROTO — The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched a refresher training programme for newly passed-out soldiers in Moroto, seeking to sharpen their combat skills and prepare them for operational deployment.

The training for soldiers from Intake 05 began on Monday at the UPDF 3 Infantry Division headquarters in Moroto, marking the next stage in their transition from basic military training to active service.

The trainees passed out on July 9, 2026, from the Olilim Basic Military Training School and were subsequently attached to units under the 3 Infantry Division.

3 Infantry Division Commander Brigadier General Michael Walaka Hyeroba said the refresher course is designed to reinforce the soldiers’ military knowledge, discipline and practical skills while exposing them to the realities and demands of field operations.

He challenged the trainees to take the programme seriously and use the opportunity to strengthen their readiness for deployment.

“You joined an institution which has rules and regulations, and you must know your role in the UPDF,” Brig Gen Walaka said.

He reminded the soldiers that discipline and adherence to military regulations are central to maintaining the professionalism and reputation of the UPDF.

The commander also urged the trainees to maintain a positive attitude, remain focused and understand the responsibilities that come with serving in the military.

The Division Operations and Training Officer, Colonel Santurino Mashereka Tumuranzye, said continuous training is critical to keeping troops operationally ready and ensuring they can respond effectively to evolving security threats.

“Training sharpens military competency and strengthens strategic security partnerships,” Col Mashereka said.

He said regular refresher programmes help troops maintain professional standards while improving their ability to work with other security and strategic partners.

The training comes as the UPDF continues to emphasise professional development, discipline and operational preparedness among its personnel.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Division Commander Colonel Winston Mugarura, brigade commanders, the Division Administration Officer, heads of departments and other senior officers.

The trainees are expected to undergo intensive sessions aimed at strengthening their military competence and ensuring they are adequately prepared before undertaking operational duties.
