The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in partnership with the Somali National Army (SNA), have successfully completed a significant road rehabilitation project along the key supply corridor connecting Mubarak, Darusalam, and Awdhegle.
Previously, the road had been left in poor condition due to ongoing hostilities, making movement difficult and unsafe. Joint engineering teams worked to restore the route by clearing debris, cutting back overgrown vegetation, and repairing damaged sections, ultimately reestablishing safe and dependable access.
According to Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, Commander of Sector One, the rehabilitation is a critical step in consolidating recent security gains while advancing broader stabilization efforts.
“This road will not only strengthen military logistics but also enable civilians to access markets, healthcare services, and other essential facilities,” he noted.
Residents have welcomed the development. Shuaib Osman, a community leader in Awdhegle, said the improved road will lower transportation costs, ease travel, and enhance connectivity between communities.
Colonel Owiny Akena, Commander of Battle Group 44, emphasized that maintaining secure and functional supply routes remains vital for both mission effectiveness and the safety of civilians.
He reiterated the continued commitment to working closely with Somali forces and local communities to promote sustainable peace and development.
The rehabilitation effort comes on the heels of a series of successful joint operations that secured Mubarak and nearby areas, including Darusalam.
